GD shn collection being stored on hd. |
Hello, I am in the process of downloading the entire Grateful Dead collection in shn format. I do not plan on extracting the zip file of shn files. My question is: I am trying to get an idea of about how much space I will need? Has anyone else done this yet? Currently I am storing them on 300g external harddrives.

2807 shows, figure a gig apiece, that's 2.8 terabytes. Just get three of these and you'll be all set:

or better yet, donate the $3000 to archive.org to help ensure that they can keep all these shows up on *their* disks. then you won't need 'em on yours.

I suppose none of us know, but what's the archival quality of a dvd or cdr? You can dl all the shows on external hds and take the risk of mechanical failures on one, some or all of them, or watch as one by one roughly 3000 cdrs or 1000 dvds slowly fade out and become unplayable. so many great options.

I am sure someone could probably answer this better. Got a calculator!? LOL! Over a 30 year span the boys did nearly 3,000 shows right. I forget the exact #. Around 2800?? If you look in the properties of a show you can see the size. I just downloaded 9-3-88 and the size is 836 MB. Naturally every show is different but many may be close. Earlier shows were longer etc....I would round it off and figure a gig a show (? maybe) x the amount of shows to figure it out. A guestimate if you will. Your going for it all huh? LOL!!!!! Best wishes on this venture. If you search GD. Right now there are 2,807 shows. Probably some duplicates. You can also see the size before your download. Choose is close I think. You'll probably need 9 or 10 hardrives before all is said and done. I like the idea. If I had the funds I would do it myself. If I were you and really wanted the whole lot like me I would just take it one step at a time. Fill a hd, get another. Peace

A cheaper route might be to save the original shns on a dvd if you have a dvd burner on your computer. This way you don't have to buy multiple hard drives.

Yes. Multiple ext hd's will cost a small fortune. Especially 300's. For my wallet anyways. Peace

At 4.3GB a pop, that's approximately 700 DVD-R's. :)

Hehe, that's allot of dvd's! I wanted to add, if you use External hardrives you never know. You could do all that work and have one blow out! Imagine that! I can. It happened to me with a 120 gigger not long ago. I had nothing backed up and lost everything on it! I had it only for about a week too! I lost a large body of music, cakewalk files I loaded. EVERYTHING! How could you safely backup all of this if you use hard drives. You maybe may want to take that into consideration before you start. It probably won't happen. But it could! Hmmmmmmmm, what to do, what to do...The Grateful Dead and Jerry just created so much music and left so much behind!!!! It took them 30 years to do that. And I think it may take you 30 years to do this! LOL & JK. I would love it all too. Where I would store it if I tried to do this? Who knows. I already have a huge cdr collection so I think I'll keep doing it that way. I will need a bigger closet soon!!! I won't attempt the math using cd'rs! LOL and have a grate day!

If I were going to tackle a project like that (assuming I had the money to buy that many hard drives), I would buy one of those external USB2 or Firewire Arrays that allow you to run an 8 or 10 disc RAID5 configuration using IDE discs.
One *huge* partition, hot swappable fault-tolerance. :) If you lose a drive, you can just buy a new one, pop it in, and rebuild the array without loss of data.
Only problem is all the drives have to be the same size/speed and when there is a failure you need to come up with another one of the same size/speed before another hard drive fails. If you lose a 2nd drive before making the replacement, you will lose the whole array.

See that's my point. It's allot of work you could lose, and to the person who wants to do this, the last post before mine made me think. Seeing as you have everything at your disposal right here and can download any show at will, there's no way I think anyone today would need to save everything just to have. Everything is right here and you can touch on it anytime. And I don't think it's going anywhere. Is there any way etree could crash and lose everything? I was wondering where all the files are actually stored. You see what i'm saying though. "THINK THIS THROUGH WITH ME!!"hehe.
I wouldn't bother but I was seriously thinking about it when I first read your post. LOL! But then again, maybe you just want to accomplish a large task which is grate. And that is what this would be. LOL and have a grate day!!!

I've humorously called it the "bomb shelter" mentality, and can understand it. Another way to think of it is "multiple offsite backup."
For GD at least though, I feel confident that we're pretty deeply backed up these days in both the archival (IA, tol, gdlive) and trading (db.etree.org etc) realms.
